What is bruxism?
Bruxism — commonly known as teeth grinding — is a condition where individuals unconsciously grind or clench their teeth, often during sleep. This habit can lead to:
- Tooth wear and fractures
- Jaw pain and headaches
- Damage to crowns, bridges and veneers
- Muscle fatigue and tension
Causes are multifactorial — stress, anxiety, sleep disorders and abnormal bite alignment.
How do we treat bruxism?
The most common treatment is a custom-fitted night guard, worn over teeth during sleep to prevent grinding and minimize damage. If stress is significant, we recommend management techniques or therapist referral. If linked to misaligned teeth, orthodontics may be needed. In severe cases, Botox injections may relax jaw muscles and reduce grinding.
